Beach Clean: GCB Joins Sustainable Forces with Galway Atlantaquaria
Galway Convention Bureau is committed to sustainable practices – whether it’s in the office or at a Galway conference. But Galway doesn’t end there, so why should our green efforts?
We contacted one of our members, Gary Kendellen of Galway Atlantaquaria to lead our team in a beach clean-up at Grattan Beach in Salthill for a morning of rock pool discovery and waste collection. The hands-on rock pool tour involved getting up close with a variety of fish, seaweed and rocks, and even a rare European eel who unfortunately dashed away too quickly to capture on video.
Armed with gloves and bags provided by Garry, and our bright blue Galway Convention Bureau rain jackets as grey clouds rolled in, the group worked together to remove debris along one of Salthill’s most beloved beaches. With no surprise, Grattan Beach was mostly clean as Garry has started leading beach clean ups with local Galway businesses. Garry explained that many fail to realise that the majority of rubbish is IN the ocean, making it a continual effort to keep our shorelines clean.
Garry’s passion for Galway’s marine ecosystems turned a shoreline stroll into a fascinating dive into local biodiversity. This outing was educational as well as a chance to spread the word of how we can all make a difference in our local community while also supporting Galway businesses.
